Roberta "Birdie" (Sloan) Kurten

Roberta “Birdie” Kurten, 74, Reynoldsville, passed away March 24, 2021 at Highland View Health Care. She was born March 6, 1947 in Reynoldsville, daughter of the late William & Martina (Sloan) Leiberton. On August 6, 1966 she married her high school sweet heart Richard “Brad” Kurten, Sr. Together they celebrated 55 years of marriage.

Birdie graduated in 1965 from Reynoldsville-Sykesville High School. She was a homemaker and known as “Aunt Birdie” to lots of kids in her community. She is one of the original members of the Reynoldsville Home Coming Committee.

In addition to her husband, Birdie also leaves behind a daughter Robin (Tom) Olewnick, Penfield, her angel & granddaughter Madison Olewnick, Penfield, a sister Carol Ishman, Reynoldsville and several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the Rosary & Alter Society at St. Marys Catholic Church in Reynoldsville and a foster mother with Catholic Charities for several years. Birdie was also a Girl Scout Leader.

Birdie was preceded in death by her parents, a son Richard Kurten, Jr., two sisters Ellen Strouse & Rita Leiberton and a brother William Leiberton.

There will be no public visitation. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at 2pm at the Leo Nedza Funeral Home of Sykesville. Friends will be received on Saturday at the Funeral Home from 1pm until 2pm.
