John Wesley “Cinders” McNulty, 78, of Brockway passed away Saturday, July 5, 2025 at Penn Highlands Healthcare in DuBois. He was born December 11, 1946 in Lock Haven, PA., a son of the late John & Janice (Knisely) McNulty.
Cinders is a 1965 graduate of Brockway HS, where he lettered in varsity football and basketball. He was selected 1st team Allegheny Mountain League (All Star Team).
He is survived by his son Patrick McNulty of DuBois, two sisters Bridget (Phil) Swartzlander of Texas and Deirdre McNulty of Brockway.
Cinders enlisted in the US Air Force in 1966 and was stationed in France, Turkey, Montana, Vietnam, South Carolina, Okinawa, and Wyoming where he was Honorably discharged after 8 years of service.
He worked as a Patrolman with the Brockway Police Department, before working at Brockway Glass and Brockway Clay Company for a few years. Cinders then enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh where he studied Sociology and Political Science. He transferred to Clarion University where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree and was selected to attend Grad School. He was also a life time member of The International Sociology Honor Society. He graduated in 1996, having made the Dean’s List numerous times.
His fondest memory while attending Clarion University was being involved in getting Dennis Banks, (co-founder of American Indian Movement) to speak at Ethnicity Week. “Sitting down to dinner with Mr. Banks was quite an honor”.
Cinders went to work at the Bi-County Addiction Center as a Counselor before moving on to Community Mental Health. He eventually moved on to Therapist Supervisor and Case Manager. He supervised two out patients’ programs before a heart condition forced him into retirement, but he was committed to helping others long after retirement.
In addition to his parents, Cinders was also preceded in death by a five-year-old daughter, Audri Jane McNulty who tragically died in a house fire and a brother Tom McNulty.
Viewing will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025 from 5 until 7 at the Leo Nedza Funeral Home of DuBois. Services will follow at the funeral home at 7pm. Military Honors will be accorded by the Jefferson County Veterans Honor Guard.
